If you're on Medicare and have been interested in medications like Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss, there is some exciting news!
Beginning July 1, 2026, the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program gives certain Medicare beneficiaries access to covered GLP-1 weight-loss medications for just $50 per month.
Who Can Qualify?
You must have Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage and meet certain health requirements.
You may qualify if:
BMI of 35 or higher — no additional qualifying condition required.
BMI of 30 or higher PLUS certain conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, stage 3a or higher chronic kidney disease, or certain types of heart failure.
BMI of 27 or higher PLUS prediabetes or certain cardiovascular conditions, such as a previous heart attack or stroke.
What Medications Are Included?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge currently includes certain forms of:
Wegovy® • Zepbound® • Foundayo®
Eligible participants pay $50 for a one-month supply, regardless of income. That $50 does not count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit.
There Are Some Important Exceptions
You generally cannot use the Bridge Program if your Medicare Part D plan already covers the GLP-1 medication for you.
There are also different rules if you have conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease, because your regular Part D plan may already provide GLP-1 coverage for those conditions.
How Do You Get Started?
Your doctor or healthcare provider is involved in the process.
If a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for you, your provider can send the prescription to the pharmacy and may need to complete a prior authorization. Your provider must also certify that the medication is being used as part of a lifestyle program involving diet and exercise.
The Bottom Line
For years, one of the biggest obstacles Medicare beneficiaries faced with GLP-1 medications for weight loss was coverage and cost.
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge could change that for people who meet the eligibility requirements.
If you've wanted to explore a GLP-1 medication but assumed Medicare wouldn't help pay for it, it may be worth checking again.
