Medicare Part D: What You Need to Know About Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare can feel like an alphabet soup at first — Part A, Part B, Part C, and then there’s Part D. So, what exactly is Part D?
Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. If you have Original Medicare, you can purchase a stand-alone Part D plan from a private insurance company to help cover your medications.
One thing Medicare Melanie always reminds her clients about is that Part D plans are not all the same. A plan that works perfectly for your neighbor may be a terrible fit for you. Each plan can have different premiums, covered medications, pharmacy networks, deductibles, and copays.
Think about it like this - If your neighbor takes a medication and it works for her, should you start taking that medication solely because it worked for her? I hope your answer is an astounding, NO!
That’s why I believe your Part D coverage should be reviewed every year. Insurance companies can change their plans, and your prescriptions can change too.
There’s also another important reason not to ignore Part D: if you go without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable prescription coverage for too long, you could face a late enrollment penalty that may follow you for as long as you have Part D.
At Forever Healthy Insurance Solutions, Medicare Melanie, helps clients compare their medications and pharmacy preferences with available Part D plans so they can make an informed decision.
Medicare doesn't have to be confusing. Sometimes you just need someone willing to explain it in plain English.
